What would be possible if you made a living with your art?
Owning and running a creative business allows me to live life on my terms. My time is my own, I work from home, travel when I want, and set my own schedule. I get to make art, I’m part of a community of makers, and the products I make connect people with the ones they love.
It’s pretty incredible.
Questions I am most often asked:
How do I get started?
Where can I sell my products?
How will people find my products?
What do I charge?
How do I sell wholesale?
How do I find a sales rep?
Some of my favorite things to talk about:
Designing products from your heart
Making business decisions intuitively
Creating genuine relationships with media outlets
Building systems to make life easier
Incorporating the environment into your business plan
Growing a small business with integrity
Who I love to work with:
People with ideas
People ready to act
People looking for direction
People embracing their magic
I work with clients in their first 3 years of business in the creative/maker/arts field. I work with maximum three clients at a time. If you're ready to start your own creative business or take one to the next level, I would be honored to help you thrive doing what you love.
What would it mean to invest in time with someone who's been there?
I worked hard to build this business and this life. I started Sad Shop in 2012, after being a freelance designer for years. I’ve grown my business enormously and I'm proud to be abundantly supporting myself with art.
Now in its eighth year, Sad Shop is:
- Carried at more than 400 stores
- Stocked across the U.S. and the world, including Australia, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia
- Featured at major retailers like Paper Source, Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom, and West Elm
- Represented by sales reps in all 50 states
- Recommended by Vogue, Cosmopolitan, BuzzFeed, HuffPost, and more
Over 7 years and more than 14,000 shipped orders later, I’ve learned a lot. I have made plenty of mistakes and celebrated many wins. My business and my products have changed and leveled up over time.
I did this with help. I’ve taken courses, joined mastermind groups, and worked with coaches and mentors. I have greatly benefitted by creating a personalized community of business support for myself. (If we work together, you'll have access to all the information I gained from the investments I made in myself.) I highly recommend reaching out for help when you need it!
"Starting a small business can be daunting. Luckily, we had Katie to provide us with insightful and thoughtful advice. As a sustainable toothbrush company, she helped us focus our limited time and resources to reach the right customer base. With a mix of e-commerce/SEO-targeting, face-to-face sales channels, and a 'rolodex' of contacts, Katie helped our business spread our message and begin selling right away. I highly recommend her consultation because it is rooted in real business experience." — Jay Sueno, MamaP
"Katie is our hero! She supported us with business advice on topics from wholesale and craft shows to accounting and sales tax. She is extremely compassionate and intelligent, and made things that felt daunting much easier. Katie particularly helped us perfect the language in our marketing materials; she is a wording genius. We are so impressed with Katie and send our huge thanks!" — Kate Leaver, Yéyé Cosmetics
"Katie is a powerful example of building a business with thoughtful intention, aligned with core values and authentic voice. Her innate ability to put words to the emotions and experiences we share, coupled with her signature bold red typography has created an oft-imitated but never replicable brand identity that serves as inspiration to anyone developing a product-rich, purposeful lifestyle company." — Crosby Noricks, PR Couture
