Mentor Sessions

I love to talk with people starting a creative business!

I started Sad Shop in 2012, after being a freelance designer for many years. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to support myself with art.

Now in its eighth year, my business has grown considerably:

  • Shipped more than 14,000 orders
  • Carried at more than 350 stores
  • Sales reps in all 50 states
  • Stockists across the U.S. and the world, including Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Hong Kong
  • Featured at Urban Outfitters, Paper Source, Nordstrom, and West Elm
  • Recommended by Vogue, Cosmopolitan, BuzzFeed, HuffPost, and more
I’ve worked through logistics around:

  • Setting up a new business
  • Creating a cohesive product line
  • Pricing
  • Shipping
  • Building systems
  • Sourcing suppliers
  • Inventory management
  • Selling on Etsy and Amazon
  • Selling wholesale to stores
  • Working with sales reps
  • Pop-up shops
  • Flash sales
  • Hiring employees
  • Outsourcing production
  • Reaching out to press
  • Sales and marketing materials
  • Time management
  • Work/life balance
If you’re just starting out and need tips and encouragement, let’s talk!

Testimonials

"Starting a small business can be daunting. Luckily, we had Katie to provide us with insightful and thoughtful advice. As a sustainable toothbrush company, she helped us focus our limited time and resources to reach the right customer base. With a mix of e-commerce/SEO-targeting, face-to-face sales channels, and a 'rolodex' of contacts, Katie helped our business spread our message and begin selling right away. I highly recommend her consultation because it is rooted in real business experience." - Jay Sueno, MamaP

"Katie is a powerful example of building a business with thoughtful intention, aligned with core values and authentic voice. Her innate ability to put words to the emotions and experiences we share, coupled with her signature bold red typography has created an oft-imitated but never replicable brand identity that serves as inspiration to anyone developing a product-rich, purposeful lifestyle company." - Crosby Noricks, PR Couture

My first tip: Don’t be afraid of iterations. Your business will go through many stages. Your website, your sales materials, your products — everything will change as you learn what works best for you and your business. Start where you are! It doesn’t have to be perfect.
